Official Parade Rules

  1. The Redding Lighted Christmas Parade is a long time Redding tradition, always held on the first Saturday Evening in December. Each year the Active 20-30 Club chooses a specific theme for the parade and we encourage entry designs to be in keeping with the theme. We recognize that it is not always possible, however, the general theme of the parade is "Christmas" and we require every entry to follow this general theme. The Active 20-30 Club reserves the right to determine the overall appropriateness of any entry in the Lighted Christmas Parade and to deny entry to anyone not adhering to the general theme of the parade.

  2. Any entry having more than one competing unit must pay an entry fee for each unit. NO EXCEPTIONS. (Example: Your band, cheerleaders and drum majors must compete in their own categories and are considered separate entries).

  3. Once the road closures are in place for both staging areas and the parade route, vehicles that are NOT an active part of an entry will not be permitted to enter those areas (i.e.: parents dropping off children for entries, support vehicles bringing supplies, etc.)  EXCEPTIONS ARE MADE ONLY BY THE PARADE DIRECTOR.  A map will be provided for entries that shows appropriate areas for drop off after the road closures are in place.  Parking outside of the staging and areas and walking in is permitted.

  4. Any vehicles within staging areas found to be blocking the parade route or movement of entries once road closures are in place will be towed.  Any vehicles found on the parade route after road closures are in place will be towed.

  5. In order not to confuse the children, THERE WILL BE ONLY ONE LIVE SANTA CLAUS, which is provided by the Active 20-30 Club. If a live Santa Claus is in your entry, your entry will be DISQUALIFIED and taken out of the parade line-up! NO EXCEPTIONS.

  6. Every entry MUST be lighted. NO EXCEPTIONS. This means any person(s) walking, including chaperones. All vehicles in the entry must be lighted.  Entries without lights will not be admitted in the parade lineup. Headlights of vehicles do not qualify. Battery operated lights can be purchased at most variety stores.

  7. NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WILL BE ALLOWED ON OR AROUND THE PARADE ENTRIES OR ROUTE.

  8. FOR SAFETY REASONS AND PER THE REDDING POLICE DEPARTMENT NO ITEMS OF ANY KIND ARE TO BE THROWN OUT TO THE CROWD from anyone in the entry (i.e.: candy, balloons, flyers, etc.) Any entry found to be doing so will be disqualified.  NO EXCEPTIONS.

  9. ALL VEHICLES SHALL MAINTAIN A SAFE SPEED AND MUST BE SAFELY OPERATED.

  10. ALL ENTRIES MUST KEEP MOVING AND ARE NOT ALLOWED TO STOP (i.e. to perform tricks or dances, etc.)  The flow of the parade is critical to the event and any entry found to be stopping or slowing the pace of the parade will face disqualification.  All entries must maintain a space of approximately 50 feet from the entry ahead. If any entry stalls or stops, the parade will move around it. Any entry not completing the route as a complete unit, will be disqualified. The determination of entry placement and category is governed by the Parade Director, and is final.

  11. All entries 12 years and younger MUST have an adult present.

  12. Guard railings must be at least 42 inches high on all floats that will have active movement to prevent persons from falling off and becoming injured.

  13. LENGTH OF VEHICLE(S) AND/OR FLOAT MUST BE LISTED ON REGISTRATION FORM. This total length of entry is to include number of vehicles, walkers, etc.  This is important for staging purposes.

  14. MAXIMUM ENTRY HEIGHT IS 14’-0”.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  If your entry is measured taller than that, it must either be adjusted to be under that height before the start of the parade or entry will be disqualified and not allowed to participate.

  15. ALL ENTRIES MUST BE LINED UP BY 4:30 PM  AND ACCOUNTED FOR OR THEY MAY BE DISQUALIFIED.

  16. If paper is used in the construction of an entry, the paper must be flame retardant. A fire extinguisher (size 2A-10 BC or larger) is required on all entries. Floats will be inspected by the Redding Fire Department in the staging area.

  17. Bands must play continuously, with no more than eight complete cadences between selections.

  18. Only Christmas Music shall be played.

  19. Entries MUST follow the parade route as illustrated or face disqualification.  Exceptions are granted as needed by the Parade Director or Redding Police Department.

  20. Trophies will be awarded following the conclusion of the parade at a location to be announced immediately following the parade. Please make every effort to attend the awards ceremony. Trophies not claimed at the awards presentation may be picked up at a location to be determined.
